LINPAC, G Mondini and Bemis deliver Fresh Innovation Workshop

More than 30 meat processing and packaging companies came together recently at a Fresh Innovation Workshop organised by LINPAC Packaging, G Mondini and Bemis, to discover more about skin packaging developments.

Speakers from LINPAC Packaging, Europe’s leading multi-material packaging manufacturer, G Mondini, the leading manufacturer of tray skin packaging machinery, and Bemis, the international films manufacturer, joined forces to demonstrate an innovative and exciting alternative to the way meat, fish and poultry is currently skin packed in the UK and Ireland.

Meat and fish processors from across the UK and Ireland were able to view a demonstration of the Mondini Trave 340 sealing machine working with LINPAC Packaging’s new range of VSP trays and the Bemis SkinTite film – demonstrating a credible alternative to the currently available skin pack options.

Joanna Stephenson, Vice-President Marketing & Innovation at LINPAC Packaging, said: “Traditional skin packaging options, whilst offering extended product shelf life, do not always have the greatest shelf appeal, and also present the retailer with challenges in terms of branding and shelf space efficiency. The solution we have put together addresses all these issues but also offers the packer a flexible and highly efficient packaging line that is suitable for both high- and low-run lengths. It gives retailers a great looking pack which can be attractively branded and displayed – whether shingled or vertical or, by the inclusion of a Euroslot, hung to maximize shelf space efficiency.”

Alan Bickerton, Managing Director of G Mondini in the UK, said: “The technology we’ve developed means that our range of tray skin machines can deliver multiple packaging material formats on one tray-sealing platform. Crucially, the same machine can skin pack a normal tray (for sliced and cooked meats), protruding skin packs (for steaks, chops and chicken breasts) and super protruding (for joints and whole chickens).”

Mr Bickerton and his team later gave a demonstration of a Mondini Trave 340 VG – a multi-format machine capable of producing MAP and all the skin formats, including protruding, super protruding and stretch seal.

Finally, Petteri Oksanen, Marketing Manager at Bemis, showed the benefits of the Bemis range of SkinTite™ films specially developed to deliver skin pack packaging solutions.

He said: “The skin pack solutions mean that product protection is significantly improved and that shelf-life for meat can be extended by as much as three days. That is a very important figure for retailers, as it brings improved inventory and order management, plus production efficiency.

“Finally, with the skin pack solution, retailers and brands can create outstanding and attractive product presentation and differentiation, easy-to-open peel options and a range of unique pack formats.”

Following the success of its Fresh Thinking seminars and workshops throughout 2012, LINPAC Packaging is putting together a full programme of seminars for 2013. Further details will be announced in the New Year.
